The answer is d) all of the above.
Women are living well into the eighties and many will spend more years in retirement than they ever did working. As you can imagine, this is placing a tremendous strain on the Social Security system. One of the best ways to be prepared for retirement is to prepare yourself.
"Forty-two percent of all women over seventy-five are living on less than $13,000 a year, and when Baby-Boom women retire, only an estimated twenty percent of them will be financially secure" according to a special report titled "Why Most Women Can't Afford To Retire" in the current issue of Ms. Magazine. It is estimated that only 20% of boomer women (born between 1946 and 1964 will be financially secure in retirement.
Here's some wisdom for women planning for retirement:
1. Statistics show that 80% of women will need to take charge of their own finances at some point in time. It is important for them to fully understand their personal finances and investments. If you don't understand your finances, ask your husband to explain them to you, enroll in a class and your local community college or learning center or check out some financially related books from the library.
2. It's never too soon to get started investing for retirement. The sooner you get started, the longer you have to let your money work for you. Don't put off saving. Just $25 a week starting at age 35 could add up to $100,000 to your nest egg before retirement. Start now, automate the process by having the money automatically deducted from your paycheck before you have a chance to spend or even see it.
3. Whenever you take a job, always ask about their pension plan. Find out how long until you are eligible, vesting requirements, will the employer contribute to and/or match your funds and if so, at what percentage rate?
4. Beware of taking Social Security early. Currently, the retirement age for full benefits is 65, and the earliest age at which one is eligible for benefits is 62. If you take your retirement benefits early, the result is reduced benefits by as much as 30 percent for as long as you live. The eligibility age for full Social Security benefits has been revised from 65 to 67 years of age, to be phased in by the year 2022.

FACT ONE:
MOST OF THE FINANCIAL HARDSHIP EXPERIENCED BY WOMEN IN LATER LIFE IS DUE TO SOMEONE REFUSING TO FACE FACTS EARLY ON.
These days there is no need for any woman to spend the second half of her life with a lower standard of living. Yet many still do. This is because they continually defer the decision to do something about preparing for their financial future until it is too late.
In some instances it is because a woman doesn't know exactly what financial provision has been made for her, or feels awkward asking. Or maybe she doesn't marry, in which case she MUST provide for herself, but fails to do so. When you are young, healthy and enjoying life, it seems unnecessary to be thinking of putting something aside and there is always something else to spend the money on. With good luck of course you may never need to bother. But trusting in luck is no way to provide for your future, how often has luck let you down in the past?
Life, as 'they' (who is 'they'?) say, is what happens to you while you are making plans to do something else. (Think it was John Lennon who uttered those wise words.) So it is better to make provision for the unexpected, because the older you get, the more the unexpected happens.
FACT TWO:
WOMEN NEED TO PREPARE FOR FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE JUST AS MUCH AS MEN DO.
These days one does not hear so much about the "family breadwinner," largely because so many women either provide for themselves or make a substantial contribution to the FAMILY INCOME.
But what happens if your husband dies and his income dies with him? Suddenly you are prevented from working.
All to often the result is a dramatic fall in the family's standard of living and in their quality of life. And this happens just at the time creature comforts are most needed to soften the blow. No amount of money can bring back a loved one, but quite small amounts set aside regularly can make the difference between sadness and absolute despair for you and your children.
The only way to be sure you can cope is to do something about it yourself-- to make sure you are adequately provided for.
FACT THREE:
THREE OUT OF FOUR WOMEN HAVE NO PERSONAL SAVINGS.
Women are natural savers. Security comes very high on their list of life's priorities and yet so few have actually managed to save anything at all.
Others have put aside a little in a savings account or building society which is fine for short term savings but doesn't really offer a chance for the money to grow into a worthwhile sum. Many who have saved watched the demand of the early years of marriage swallow up their nest egg and never had enough incentive to replace it later on, thinking that everything would be provided for.
FACT FOUR:
WOMEN LIVE LONGER AND SO HAVE A GREATER CHANCE OF BEING LEFT ALONE.
On average a woman can expect to live longer than a man. For a married woman the implications are obvious but a single woman will also face the possibility that later in life she will have fewer friends and relatives around. In neither case is this a time for financial hardship.
Some women manage to lead active and fulfilling lives in their later years even when living alone. But in the majority of cases these are women who have made, or made for them, provision for their financial security.
It is possible to be happy, active and fulfilled on the State old age pension. But this is not easy... especially these days Anyway, State Pensions all over the world are being drastically reduced. The politicians say with an aging population they are unaffordable (is there such a word?)... but who can ever believe a politician! My advice: Take responsibility for your own financial destiny. Make a commitment to save something out of your pay packet.
FACT FIVE:
ONE MARRIAGE IN THREE ENDS IN DIVORCE, DESERTION OR SEPARATION
The statistics of the divorce rate don't always prove that marriage is in a bad state. In many instances they prove that women are no longer prepared to put up with all that they were asked to endure. "Sorry guys, I'm off!" Unpleasant as it may be, divorce often comes as a blessing. But it can never come as anything but a tragedy if the separation means a lowering of standards, having to refuse the family little pleasures they have grown used to.
The woman who starts out to plan her own future is not only able to cope if something should happen, but is less likely to have it happen.
FACT SIX:
THINKING ABOUT WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN DOESN'T MAKE IT HAPPEN.
"It's morbid". "We don't want to think about it."
That has been used as an excuse time and time again. But not thinking about it won't prevent it happening. The time has come to be positive. But taking a hard look now at your situation and doing something about it won't be tempting fate. But it will be a positive step towards making sure that no matter what life may have in store , good or bad, you can rest easy in the knowledge that you can cope on your own if necessary. And that's a feeling every woman in the country should get to know. Because without financial independence most of the other rights women now have are hardly worth having.
THE FINAL WORD:
Whatever you decide to do about your financial security, DO SOMETHING. PLAN for the future and let financial services products like life assurance work for you. They don't have to be such a "drag" or a painful nuisance to you and your family. One of the greatest human wants is a feeling of security and only life assurance can give you that peace of mind. As Winston Churchill once said so well :" If I had my way I would write the words 'insure, insure, insure' above every household door".
No matter where you are floating down the river of life, make a PLAN to achieve financial independance.

Customer Review: Monsters in the water, love in the past
As explained at the beginning of this book, Templeton is actually Cooperstown. You know, the place with the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Or rather, it's a "slantwise" version of Cooperstown, with lake monsters, friendly ghosts, and a tangle of ancient family secrets. Lauren Groff's "The Monsters of Templeton" is a cleverly interwoven mystery of old secrets, poetic writing and forgotten scandals, but her heroine is the book's Achilles heel.
Willie Upton is returning to her mother's shabby mansion, pregnant and disgraced after trying to run over her married lover's wife. On the same morning, a gigantic monster is found floating in the nearby lake.
Unsurprisingly, Willie is far more interested in her own problems, especially when her hippie-turned-Baptist mother reveals that Willie was not conceived in a free-love orgy, but with a man she knows right in Templeton. To distract herself from her woes, Willie decides to take a single clue and explore back through her family's history, hoping to find the man who fathered her.
Turns out the Temple family tree has a lot of memorable people -- a savvy slave girl, an ethereal Schizophrenic, a pyromaniac, at least one murderer, a popular novelist, a gentle giant. And as Willie backtracks through her family tree, she finds that the secret of her father's ancestry is intertwined in family scandals long forgotten...
It sounds like a fairly ordinary "family saga" novel, doesn't it? But Groff does infuse something special into the story, including touches of magical realism (an immortal town weirdo, a long-lived lake monster, and a lilac ghost) and a series of family accounts that intertwine over time. Which ones are true, and which are self-serving lies? Well, that's up to the reader.
And Groff spins out this complex story in the decaying small-town paradise of Templeton, through misty colours and vibrant details ("the letters themselves smelled of antique rose-water and age-crisped lace"). Despite its links to the "slantwise" past, a feeling of near-fantastical isolation fills Groff's prose, tempered by the fact that there are so many quirky moments from Clarissa and Vi ("I LIKE the international foods potluck").
The biggest problem with this book is Willie herself -- a whiny, selfish brat whose snobbery, anti-religious bigotry and violent behavior are treated as minor flaws. About two-thirds of the way through, Groff seems to realize that Willie is a pretty nasty piece of work, and tries to soften her into a more likable heroine. This happens without warning or development, and it's too little too late.
Groff's supporting characters are far more likable, especially Willie's vivacious, sickly pal Clarissa, and the two unpredictable ex-classmates who are inexplicably vying for her affections. And Vi is a character deserving her own book -- an ex-hippie earth-mother-type whose free-spirited past is awkwardly fitting with her newfound faith. As the book winds on, we find that it's Vi, not Willie, who is the center of the book.
The only real flaw with "The Monsters of Templeton" is Lauren Groff's lead character. The rest of the book is a dreamlike tapestry of half-real history and magical realism. Definitely worth a read for Groff's way with words.
Customer Review: Lakeside Attraction
So much has been said in other reviews about the plot and content, I only wanted to add that there is a lot between these covers, almost too much of a wealth of detail and wit, but handled with imagination and humor. Readers can only hope that Groff hasn't used up all her material in this one book and will produce more in the future.

Customer Review: Best of the Best!
If you haven't read the China Bayles books - please start, but NOT here. This is the culmination of the mystery surrounding China's family and it is the best of all of her stories. The characters are fleshy, the story line is full of mystery - just enough of Ruby and plenty of food. Your mouth will water with the succulent dishes AND the murder mystery. Ms. Albert is a superb writer. I look forward to each book and try to take my time - but in a day or two the read is over and I am waiting again for the next book. Buy the first book and don't stop until Nightshade. This is an excellent series of books written by a skilled author.

Recently, China Boyles learned she had an illegitimate half-brother Miles sired by her father on his secretary Laura who worked in his law firm. He never knew the man he called uncle was really his dad until his biological father died leading to Miles finding letters written to his mother. They implied he was in danger and so were Laura and Miles. Miles believes that the car accident that killed his father was in reality a murder.
China is not interested in reconnecting with her past to find out if her father was murdered but her husband McQuaid, now a private detective, is very interested for numerous reasons. When Miles thinks he located the car that his father died in, he asks McQuaid to meet him at a designated spot. When he doesn't show up, China and McQuaid learn he was killed in the garage where he parks his car for work. McQuaid is determined to carry on with the investigation and when he goes to the location of where the car is supposed to be the woman who is holding on to it looks like she is dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. McQuaid is sure that it was attempted murder and when he pools his information with the info on the tape Laura made that China found, they go to confront someone who might have the answers not knowing that China is in danger of getting shot.
NIGHTSHADE is one of the best books in the China Bayles series. The story is told in the first person POV from the perspectives of China and McQuaid allowing fans for the first time to understand how he thinks. They will love what they learn especially how he sees his wife and his feelings about her that he is too macho to articulate. The mystery is well thought out and the killings in the present have roots in the past. Susan Wittig Albert always delivers a fantastic mystery.

Customer Review: Qi Gong with a soft touch
I discovered qi gong when two family members were stricken with cancer in the same few months. I learned from the net that qi gong has been used to support healing for this illness. This is the second qi gong video I had looked at and I found this one superior because it combines the powerful breathing and balance part of the routine with directions to breathe in power, courage, strength, joy, etc. and breathe out stress, fear, anger, etc. It is also aesthetically beautiful with nature symbols and has easy to follow directions. Wonderful for anyone - ill or not. I've taken it up myself with gusto.
